Before you travel the world, travel to any AAA branch location and pick up your International Driving Permit (IDP) or Inter-American Driving Permit (IADP)... even if you do not plan to drive abroad. Should you need to communicate with foreign authorities, this recognizable form of identification can help you get on your way more quickly.
Valid in more than 150 countries, the permit contains your name, photo and driver information translated into ten languages.

Visit a AAA Branch
Bring your valid U.S. driver's license, $15 USD, and two original passport-type photos to any AAA branch.
You may also wish to fill out our International Driving Permit or Inter-American Driving application in advance. Simply print out the application, fill in the information requested and bring it with you to the AAA branch nearest you.
If you prefer to secure your International Driving Permit or Inter-American Driving Permit through the mail, enclose your completed application form, two original passport-type photos each signed on the back, a $15 permit fee and a photocopy of both sides of your US driver's license and mail to the AAA branch nearest you. Check with the AAA location for acceptable forms of payment. (AAA MountainWest accepts Visa, Matercard and personal check.) Include additional funds for expedited return mail service, if desired.

The International or Inter-American Permit is not valid for driving in the United States. Issuance of Permit is restricted to persons 18 years of age or over who hold a valid U.S.A. or Territorial License. Permit valid for one year. Not renewable. Must be issued within 6 months of application date.
